Description

Jefferys Map of Yorkshire – 1771

This map is at a scale of 1 inch to 1 mile. It was produced on 20 hand engraved copper plates. If all of the sheets were joined together the map would be eight feet high and ten feet wide. The map was produced in 1771 the year that Thomas Jefferys died. He was a well known and influential London engraver and map publisher. This map was surveyed by Joseph Hodskinson, Thomas Donald and John Ainslie. It is thought possible that Jefferys never set foot in Yorkshire although one of the most famous maps of the county bears his name.

The map is a beautiful example of engraving. The CD cover, shown above, is taken from one of the map vignettes.

The map also contains town plans of: Leeds, York, Sheffield, Hull, Rippon and Scarborough.
