Description
A Birds Eye View of Manchester – 1889 By H. W. Brewer
This illustration measures approximately 50 inch x 24 inch. It was drawn by H. W. Brewer and was produced as a supplement to the “Graphic” magazine on the 9th November 1889. H.W. Brewer produced several of these “Birds Eye” views of other Cities including Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Dublin and Cambridge.
The illustration is called “A Birds Eye View” and it dose give that impression. It is so realistic that it is often thought to have been drawn from the vantage point of a hot air balloon. To produce it Mr Brewer made sketches from the highest point of the Exchange Station. He would then skilfully change the perspective of the drawing to give the impression of being viewed from a point high above the Station.
The original image was produced on very thin paper so that it could be folded into the magazine. As a result the original prints were very flimsy and only a few have survived the hundred and twenty odd years since they were printed. They are now very rare, fragile and expensive.
The print that you see offered here was scanned in high resolution from an original. The image was then electronically cleaned, the fold marks were removed. The result is a very high quality stunning print. A Key image is produced at the bottom of the drawing which identifies, by numbers, 70 places of interest from the Cathedral in the foreground to the University in the distance.
The price of the print is £99.00
It can be supplied laminated for £120
